Ancient Rome

The Romans went even further towards making dance a spectator sport, but something else, something more sinister, also emerged. The dancer - for dancers were seen as separate entities by then - became a negative thing. Male dancers in particular were reviled. Christianity linked the dance and homosexuality together, then linked them both with the decay of the Roman Empire. This paved the way for attitudes and stereotypes about dance and dancers that persist to the present day.

Pictures & Articles

Some of these have interesting articles, and others I included only for the pictures - those might be for event listings, etc., but the pictures are nice.
