Welcome to Story of Dance. Last year, I taught an online class about the history of dance. Now I want to offer that same information on this website. Though I will start with the original class, I will be adding to it on a regular basis, including more resources for learning about dance in history around the world, as well as dance today.
The introduction gives a nice overview of what you'll find in the rest of the materials, as well as insight into my philosophy. After that, I move into the first section, which is about tribal dance around the world.
Tribal dance spans history, which is why I'm covering that first, and then I will start with the earliest information we have about dance, with the Archaic period, then Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Then I'll hop over to India and China for brief discussions of their vast dance history. Those sections will hopefully be expanded in the future.
Then returning to the European timeline, we'll discuss Medieval Europe and the Renaissance. Social dance after the Renaissance could fill volumes. We will touch on it briefly, and hopefully expand on it in the future.
Then on to the meat of the site, ballet, from the 16th century to the present, and modern dance. The last section is a short bit about tap and jazz, followed by a conclusion.
